According to an Erie Times-News article, fatal motorcycle accidents are on the rise in Erie County Pennsylvania. As of early September, there were nine fatal motorcycle crashes in Erie County. The record number of motorcycle deaths in the county was ten in 2008. Various factors are cited in this article as possible reasons for the increase in motorcycle fatalities including the repeal of Pennsylvania’s universal motorcycle helmet law in 2003 and the increased number of Pennsylvania motorcyclists.

This appears to be a statewide trend in Pennsylvania. Based upon statistics from PennDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle deaths have increased across the state of Pennsylvania in the past several years. In 2009, there were 204 motorcycle fatalities in Pennsylvania as compared to 156 in 2003.

Just in the last several weeks, there have been a number of fatal Pennsylvania motorcycle crashes. Here are just a few of the recent tragic accidents:

· In the Pittsburgh area, a 48-year old motorcyclist died on August 20 when he lost control of his bike after attempting to pass another vehicle and crashed into a retaining wall. His 24-year old daughter was critically injured in this Pennsylvania motorcycle accident.
· On August 27, two people riding a motorcycle in Bucks County were killed in an apparent hit-and-run motorcycle accident on New Falls Road in Bristol Township. · On August 21, a 28-year old Thomasville man died when he tried to avoid colliding with other vehicles stopped on U.S. Route 15.
