In 1994, Aaron Lanningham was racing his motorcycle when he hit a wall on a track in New Hampshire. The gruesome motorcycle accident left him paralyzed from the waist down and he was confined to a wheelchair. Yet despite his life-changing injuries, Aaron was determined to lead a full life. In 2006, he made bobsled history by becoming one of the first athletes with a disability to forerun a World Cup bobsled event.
Yet his bobsled experiences weren’t enough and Aaron longed to get back on his motorcycle. His love for motorcycle racing just wouldn’t go away—even after it had left him paralyzed. Now, Aaron is back on the race track and loving every minute of it. It took Aaron a long time to figure out how to ride again, but he has fitted his bike with some pretty interesting disability tools; he has holsters for his feet and support wheels that help him get going on his bike. While Aaron might look different from everyone else before the race starts, once he gets going on his bike, he looks just like everyone else when he is racing. He even won his first race back after his motorcycle accident.
Even though riding as a paraplegic was difficult, it gives Aaron a sense of freedom that he rarely gets to enjoy in a wheelchair. As a result, he hopes to help other disabled bikers learn to get back on their bikes by being part of The Bike Experience in the United Kingdom, and he is currently trying to get the program off the ground in the United States.
