Russ Brown Motorcycle Lawyers: In the United States, we hear all about the dangers of motorcycling, especially at this time of year when we are hitting the road in large numbers, but in Africa, motorbikes are actually helping to save lives! Southern Sudan has started using motorbike ambulances to access its remote Eastern Equatoria region. Five powerful motorcycles fitted with a sidecar bed are now being used to help pregnant women get the medical attention they so desperately need. They hope that this emergency medical treatment will cut the rate of maternal mortality.
Southern Sudan has one of the world’s worst rates of maternal mortality and a pregnant woman there has a one in six chance of dying during pregnancy or childbirth. Sadly, lack of health services is a major reason many of these women die, so healthcare experts hope that these motorbikes will offer pregnant women a chance to live past childbirth and well into their future. If this is a successful campaign, there may be more motorbikes added to access the rest of the country.
These life-saving motorbikes were donated by UNICEF and are fitted with a bed for the patient, as well as a space for the health care worker to sit behind the patient and provide care. Getting these women to hospitals and clinics could have a profound effect on the mortality rate in the country. In Malawi, motorbikes were introduced in 2005, and this medical intervention has helped reduce maternal mortality rates from 586 to 236 per 100,000 live births. Currently, there are motorbike ambulances being used in Malawi, Eastern South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and Afghanistan.
