3 Motorcyclists Die in Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Accidents

3 Motorcyclists Die in Sturgis Motorcycle Rally AccidentsWith 3 motorcyclists dying in separate accidents in a 12 hour span, Sturgis and South Dakota officials are stressing the importance of safety while on the roads in and around Sturgis. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally  draws hundreds of thousands of people to South Dakota’s Black Hills each summer began Monday and runs through Sunday.

Motorcyclists from Minnesota and Indiana died in crashes on Sunday, one from Colorado died Monday and another from Michigan was killed Tuesday.

Four motorcycle deaths were recorded during rally week last year, according to the Highway Patrol. The most deaths in the past five years occurred in 2010, when nine people died.

There is so much to see while riding that makes it especially dangerous for motorcyclists and with other factors such as speed and potential alcohol use makes for a deadly mix that can lead to serious riding conditions for all motorists, and especially bikers.

Police in strictly enforcing all temporary rally-week traffic signals, respond to crashes and other calls and maintain order.

The South Dakota Safety Council has a motorcycle safety booth on Main Street in downtown Sturgis for the first time this summer, said Christina Steele, a spokeswoman for the rally.

The general consensus of safety officials at the Sturgis rally is to take it easy and be extra vigilant when riding.

Among tips the Highway Patrol recommends include:

  • Motorcyclists should ride in single-file or staggered lines and avoid crowding the center line or crowding motorists.
  • Motorists should remember not to crowd cycles. Motorcycles have the same rights on the road as motorists.
  • Motorists and cyclists should follow the recommended speed limits. Motorcyclists should be especially aware of speed limits on curves.
  • It is against the law to drink and drive. Motorists and cyclists should make sure they have sober drivers.
  • Motorists should remember to buckle up.
  • Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear helmets.

Sturgis is all about having fun, so by thinking about your fellow motorist we can have fun and stay safe!
