Motorcycles get great gas mileage, are better for the environment, take up less space in crowded urban areas, and are easier to park. An accident involving a motorcycle and two buses in the Lincoln Tunnel resulted in a lengthy traffic jam, stranding some motorists inside the tunnels for as long as four hours, with some lanes closed for up to eight hours. The New York motorcycle accident, which occurred on the morning of February 24th, 2011, seriously injured the motorcyclist and caused a mix of injuries among 51 total passengers riding on the two buses. The crash and its slowdown effects were centered on the Manhattan-bound side of the tunnel, in one of the three tubes leading into Manhattan. New York motorists were said to be frantic until police eventually managed to “back out” much of the bottled-up traffic.

New York motorcyclists face risks every time they get on their bikes—especially when driving in the early morning hours. According to the New York Times, those risks may also include deadly hit and run accidents.
