Addie and Gussie Van Buren conquered every stubborn, small-minded convention in their way. What they accomplished would be brave and courageous now; in 1916, their daring was amazingly heroic, and in defiance of almost every standard that kept women in subservient positions to their husbands and homes.

Remember, 1916 was the year before the U.S. entered “The Great War.” Women couldn’t vote, weren’t considered the legal equals of men, and the roads outside big cities were dusty unpaved dirt. Augusta and Adeline Van Buren, two sisters from New York, set out to cross the face of America on motorcycles – even though no women had ever done that before.

The two dimpled sisters set out from Sheepshead Bay in New York on the Fourth of July, 1916. Gussie was 32, and Addie was about to turn 27. Gussie and Addie pulled into Los Angeles, California on September 8th – but that makes their trip sound simple and easy, and it was neither. The sisters rode their Indian Model F Power-Plus cycles through Buffalo, Akron, Chicago, on to Omaha and then Denver, and up the narrow dirt switchbacks of a new road climbing Pike’s Peak.

The Rocky Mountains were the most difficult part of the trip: the rugged ride was over narrow dusty trails full of ruts, or washed out completely. The sisters were often thrown off their bikes, though luckily neither was ever badly injured. They sometimes needed help from locals to get back on their bikes – and once, to get their bikes back, after they had to leave them on the nearly impassable roads outside Gilman, Colorado. Several times, they were handcuffed and arrested — for wearing men’s clothing!

Addie and Gussie spent more than eight weeks riding across the topography of America: 5,500 miles of hazardous roads, dry weather, crashes, breakdowns, dehydration, heavy rains, washouts and mud. In 1916, there were no paved superhighways, no motels, no Triple-A maps. The sisters became lost in the desert west of Salt Lake, and a friendly prospector saved them by sharing his water when theirs ran out. He also put them back on the trail to Reno, Nevada. From Reno, they trekked through Sacramento, then south to Los Angeles and San Diego. The sisters even rode down to Tijuana, before making their way back to the East Coast.

The Van Buren sisters’ story has an intermediate sad chapter, but ultimately ends well. The sisters had dreamed of serving their country by becoming motorcycle dispatch riders, freeing up men for combat support in the impending war effort; their cross-country ride proved that women could do whatever their nation needed, under any harsh conditions. But when Adeline applied to the military to become a dispatch rider, her application was rejected. And the media coverage of the day praised the bike, but not the daring women who rode them. Their record-setting achievement was described as a “vacation” instead of an historic triumph.

After their cross-country ride, Gussie and Addie each married — and kept breaking barriers. Addie moved from teaching English to earning a law degree from NYU. Gussie became a pilot, flying with the 99s, a women’s group founded by Amelia Earhart.

Augusta and Adeline Van Buren transcended the stereotypes and restrictions of their time, proving that a woman could do anything a man could do. In Augusta‘s words, “Woman can — if she will.”

The sisters’ legacy is extraordinary, and it continues. Augusta and Adeline Van Buren were inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006, riders retraced the route the sisters took in 1916, as a tribute 90th Anniversary Ride and Fundraiser for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. And every woman on wheels today should climb on and whisper, “Thank you, Gussie, thank you, Addie,” for the trails they blazed for us all.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Biker Belle’s Ride celebrates Women in Motorcycling – women like Gussie and Addi

Wednesday August 8 2012, the Biker Belle’s Ride will kick off from The Lodge in the historic town of Deadwood after the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast . The ride will be lead by Ride Captain, and famed Motor Maids member, Meg McDonough. Meg will take this group of incredible ladies on a scenic ride through the the beautiful Black Hills to the Legendary Buffalo Chip for a special Biker Belle celebration.

Russ Brown, Biker Attorney: Being hit on your motorcycle is one of the most devastating experiences a motorcyclist can ever be faced with; from the accident stem a number of serious issues, among them the pain and suffering sustained form the accident itself, and followed by a number decisions that must be made and how to deal with paying your medical bills, getting your motorcycle repairs and making ends meet while you are unable to work. Even if your accident wasn’t too serious and you only have moderate injuries you should expect insurance claims adjuster to stop by and visit you.

The claims adjuster may seem friendly and concerned about your injuries, but the truth of the matter is they work for the at fault parties insurance company and their job is to gather as much information possible and the motorcycle accident and you in an effort that they can settle the case for the least amount of money possible.

The best course of action is to contact an experienced and aggressive motorcycle accident lawyer and direct all correspondence directly to your lawyer. Insurance companies are in business to make money for their shareholder and when they are faced with paying out large settlements for their insured drivers negligence they will use every legal trick in the book to get the victim of the motorcycle accident to settle on the insurance company’s terms.

Hiring an experienced motorcycle accident lawyer protects your rights, putting personal injury laws to work for you making the insurance company fully accountable for settling your case for a fair and reasonable amount. Your lawyer will take the facts surrounding your case and with the report from your doctor and the lawyer’s accident investigator, they will present your case to the insurance company. If the insurance company does not agree with your lawyer’s findings it may go to court.

You are not required by law to speak with a claims adjuster, other accident investigators or sign anything, but you should always talk with police and your insurance company. Don’t delay in contacting a personal injury lawyer because each state has specific time limits on how long you can wait to file a claim and if you wait too long you may not be able to file an injury claim or at the least make it harder for your attorney to secure the maximum settlement possible.

Regardless of where you ride – we have got you covered. From Denver, Colorado to Nashville, Tennessee, from New York, NY to Los Angeles, California, Orlando, Florida to Dallas, Texas, or if you ride in Raleigh, North Carolina to Sacramento, California – we ride where you ride. Call 1-800-4BIKERS and speak to an aggressive, experienced motorcycle lawyer today!

From Friday, February 3rd through Sunday, February 5th, the Minneapolis Convention Center on Second Avenue South will host the world’s largest motorcycle show and this year promises to be a great one! With adult tickets just $15, children aged 6-11 under half price, and children under the age of 6 getting in FREE, this show is definitely one the entire family will enjoy!

The Marketplace will be full of helmets, tires, Bluetooth communications systems, suspensions, and more.
Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorney: Molly Culver specializes in being diverse. You’ve seen her on television – hosting “Biker Build Off,” “Dirt Rider Adventures” and “Ride to Adventure Extreme” – and acting on the shows “Moonlight,” “Heist” and “VIP.” You may have seen her films, “It’s Complicated,” “Contradictions of the Heart,” “The Pack” and “Crusade of Vengeance.” She’s varied in her bikes, too: in addition to her Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, she owns a Ducati 998 to ride at the track and a Kawasaki KX250 to ride in the dirt. For commutes, she has a Suzuki V-Strom.

Her home life is cycle-centric. Molly’s husband Clay Cullen is a stuntman who specializes in motorcycles and watercraft. She says that between them, their “stable” houses “a bunch of different bikes.”

Molly happens to be a beautiful combination of Welsh and Choctaw/Chickasaw American Indian, and her resume includes experience as a former high fashion and print model. She’s proud to blend motorcycle safety with looking great on a bike. She urges women to ride what they want and wear what they like that’s safe – not just what looks cool – there are lots of jackets and helmets that meet both standards. She wants women to ride safe and protected, and follow their own rather instincts than give up their power, the way some women are conditioned to do.

Molly Culver

Molly is a real motorcycle momma. She loves that their son thinks it’s natural for his mom to ride cycles, because that’s not how Molly grew up. Her mother was an emergency room nurse, and when teenaged Molly wanted to get a rise out of her mother all she had to do was pop a wheelie on her XL185 in the driveway. She still can’t convince her mother that the feelings of freedom and power are worth what her mom’s seen in the ER, but that’s one of the reasons Molly is such a strong supporter of MSF courses. Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses – and good jackets and helmets – prepare riders with the skills to avert her mother’s fears. For Molly, it’s about enjoying the experience, just riding to ride, not racing or proving supremacy like it seems to be for some men. And she is very close to her mother, even though her mom still wishes Molly had some other kind of fun….

In addition to excellent protective gear, Molly advocates rider safety education programs. She says the more you know about sliding and slipping and handling dangerous surfaces, the better prepared you are if any ever come up. Even seasoned riders can benefit from safety courses; Molly maintains if a course teaches even one small thing or new technique, then it’s made you that much better at the sport.

We enjoy sharing stories about great women in motorcycling. If you know of a great, kick-ass, woman to write about please drop us a note.

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorney: Making The Run To Sturgis

As a Writer I am always surfing Google for research information and details when writing on specific topics. While searching for historical facts on Sturgis, South Dakota and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, in particular I came across a very popular keyword titled “Why Sturgis?” After visiting a few of the websites to see what people had to say on the subject, the general gist was mainly from people who lived far away from South Dakota, and would require a 10 or more day commitment to get to and from the event. Other postings were about what makes Sturgis so special, and others still had issues with the large number of people and heavy traffic.

To me, I consider myself fortunate to have made the run to Sturgis twice; once in 1980 when I was only 18, and then again in 2010. The 1980 rally was smaller, less congested but still a once in a lifetime experience I will never forget. There were fewer vendors and seemed less commercial, but being it was my first run to Sturgis it is to this day the coolest run I ever made.

I made the 1980 run with a bro and his uncle, we had a beat up Dodge van with a trailer so we could take a break from time to time and we just hit the road. I was riding a 1965 Panhead at the time that was mostly stock, so I was fortunate for the softail rear end by the time we made it to Reno. I was young and wild and didn’t have a care in the world but for 7 days before we hit the road, but all I could think about was being about to say I made the run!

We took our time and made in 3 days. The run to Sturgis itself was mind blowing; there was so much to see and I wanted to stop at every attraction along the way, but my bro’s uncle wouldn’t have any of that; we were on a mission to get to Sturgis and that was it.

We made it to Sturgis early in the morning, but we didn’t mess around. We had a place to stay in Deadwood so after we gassed up we cruised quietly through town to our crash pad and got a few hours of rest before we partied non stop.

To me Sturgis represented not only the first large-scale motorcycle rally in the world, but the first real run I had ever made. There was so much to see and do that I don’t think it is even possible to see and everything in one run.

Deadwood is a great historic town. Deadwood boomed because of gold and gained infamy for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok. Mount Moriah Cemetery is in Deadwood and is the final resting place for Hickok and Calamity Jane. The town was famous for being wild and lawless during the gold rush.

Sturgis is famous for the motorcycle rally and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip is legendary for being legendary. The Buffalo Chip is a rally in itself. You can park an RV there or camp in a tent. The creativity that goes into some of the camp sites is hysterical. You will see swimming pools, BBQ pits, blow up dolls, palm trees, Tiki Bars, etc, etc. They host the Legend’s Ride – a great event that if you go to Sturgis, you have to take part in. The ‘Chip’ has showers, laundry facilities, a great coffee shop in the amphitheater, events in the day time to keep you entertained and of course, the best entertainment available anywhere.

BAM’s Facebook fanpage is having a contest where you can win an extended rally pass to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip – this means all your entertainment for the length of the rally and camping pass for two. You just need to LIKE the BAM Facebook page.

I don’t know about you, but when I think about all of the history Sturgis, South Dakota is responsible for and being a small part of the 1980 and 2010 events, the only question I can ask is Why Not Sturgis!

If you are heading to Sturgis, and you should, be sure to travel with Motorcycle Lawyer Russ Brown’s Benefit BAM card. It is a volunteer network of bikers like you willing to come out and lend a helping hand if you get stranded on the side of the road. The idea came to Russ when he was stranded over 100 miles from home and thought how cool would it be if there was a network of local bikers who would be willing to help a fellow rider out. Remember it’s volunteer based so back the BAM card up with a paid service – that way you have two teams in place for you on the road. And if you go down – call Russ Brown! Motorcycle Lawyer Russ Brown has been fighting for bikers like us for over three decades!

What a show. What a town! What can you say about New York that has not been said? I love New York and I love the International Motorcycle Show when it’s in New York. This was my fourth year attending this motorcycle show and it never disappoints.

The weather was decent winter weather for most of the weekend other then the snow storm that New Yorkers woke up to Saturday AM. But the snow didn’t stop New Yorkers from hitting the show by the thousands. By the show’s end 65 000 people had attended the New York International Motorcycle Show.

Carmella Brown and Lisa Petrocelli of New York Rider Magazine were in attendance and as always having a good time in the New York Rider Booth. They are one of the perks to my annual pilgrimage to New York. I met Brian Klock of Klock Werks, Scott from All About Bikes, Ken Engelmen from RoadRunner Magazine and so many more.

The bikes were off the hook! Especially the ones on display by Paul Jr. of Paul Jr. Designs and OCC. Paul Jr. was at the show with a few gorgeous bikes and signing autographs for his fans.

Electric motorcycles were a hot top. Powered by lithium batteries, small and light and hardly make any noise. These bikes may be a great choice in the near future for those looking for a more fuel efficient ride. As of now the high price point may deter many buyers.

Next up for the International Motorcycle Shows is Cleveland, Ohio this weekend, Minneapolis, Minnesota the weekend of Feb 3rd to the 5th then on to Chicago, Illinois. The IMS Show then goes on to Charlotte, NC and then wraps up in Daytona, Florida during Daytona Bike Week.

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys are proud to be part of a great show!

It’s a fact—more women are becoming motorcyclists than ever before. In fact, nearly 1 in 10 motorcycle owners is a woman and there are more than 4 million women riders! If you are a woman and considering purchasing your first bike, it is important to know what type of bike would fit your lifestyle the best.

Before you first walk into a motorcycle dealership, however, it is important to know the answers to a few questions ahead of time. Knowing this information will help you choose the bike that is best for you. Consider these important questions:

• What type of riding will you be doing predominantly? Will you be going on long tours, off-road riding, or using your bike for daily highway commuting?

• What type of maintenance are you willing to do on a bike? Are you looking for a bike that needs some work or would a newer bike fit your lifestyle better?

• Are you a new rider or an experienced rider?

• How much money are you willing to spend on you bike and on the accessories you need to ride it safely?

Once you know the answers to those questions, you are ready to hit the dealership. When your dealer begins to show you bikes, be sure to ask him:

• If there are other bikes in his showroom that would fit your needs?

• What features make this bike better than the others in its class?

• How easy is this bike to maintain?

• Are there accessories available for this bike? What are they?

• Are there any used motorcycles that would be a good fit for me?

Remember that the motorcycle salesman wants to sell you a bike, so don’t feel pressured to buy a bike that isn’t right for you or your lifestyle. Make sure that you test ride the motorcycle and are sure it fits you perfectly before going through with the purchase.

• Are the handlebars at the right height for you? Handlebar comfort is a must, especially on long rides or daily commutes? Is it possible to change the position of the handlebars if you realize you’d prefer a different height?

• Are your legs comfortable with the foot controls?

• Is the seating position comfortable for you? Do you prefer to sit upright or leaned forward?

• Is the seat at the right height for you?

• Is the bike light enough for you to manage? This is extremely important when riding and negotiating turns.

Once you’ve found the answer to all these questions, you are ready to purchase your first bike and join the ranks of the many women motorcyclists throughout the country. In addition, you should consider joining BAM, our free roadside and legal assistance program. You can rest assured knowing you are a part of the nation’s largest volunteer motorcycle assistance program that can help you if you get into any trouble on the road—no matter where you ride or what you ride, If you go down call Russ Brown. Call Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys at 1-800-4-BIKERS today! You need an aggressive, experienced top motorcycle lawyer on your side!

I don’t know about you, but I love chrome on my custom Harley Low Rider; the shine in direct light is amassing, but a lot of my riding bros are so old school that before they will spend a dime on shine they make sure their engine and drive train is in top notch condition.

Mike Toupin, owner of Chopper Design Group In La Habra California, built my custom Harley, and while he spent a lot of time on the paint, molding, and sheet metal on my new bike, I didn’t want to waste time on a building a super motor, so we went with a 96-inch balanced Evo engine. It has the perfect balance in performance and reliability.

The biggest draw back to running a stroker engine is the over all maintenance; you will have to preform a lot more rebuilds on those big bore monster motors and when you think about it, if all you really want is the perfect custom daily rider, then why waste time and money just to look cool?

Dirty Dave at Chrome Haus in Santa Fe Springs did all of my chrome and Mikey from Platinum Air Suspension hooked me up with a custom air ride system. The build took roughly 2 months and then another 4 days after that getting the ride height set, final wiring tucked and covered and getting the engine dyno’d and tuned.

I spent more money on my custom green pearl paint and framework to get that low, wide and fat look of an old school beach cruiser. Mike even found me a set of sexy old school looking handlebars to finish the beach cruiser look.

So I had my first custom Harley built from the ground up, and with some help from my bros with parts and labor for balancing, most of the chrome and the Mikuni carb, I had actually spent a little over $7,000.00 on the bike and made 2 runs on it, one to Las Vegas to hang out with an old bro and his bros and then to a tattoo show in San Francisco, California.

While at the tattoo show in San Francisco, CA, this guy came right up to me and said “I want to buy your bike now!” Hell I had just got it running and it had less than 3000 miles on it, but before I could say anything Mike Toupin the builder of the bike jumped right in and said “I built this bike and if you want it we won’t take anything less than $35,000.00 for it!” This guy didn’t even hesitate, he opened his wallet gave me a $1,000.00 and he and mike went to the bank to close the deal.

So now it was a win win situation for me, Mike and my bros who all pitched in and helped me build my own first bike. My new bike is still in the works, but I still have my dad’s old 1965 Panhead, which is defiantly cooler than most of the new custom bikes I see out on the road!

Regardless of what you ride, if you go down you call Russ Brown. Motorcycle Lawyer Russ Brown has been fighting for injured bikers for over thirty years. If I was in a motorcycle accident that is the biker lawyer I would call. 1-800-4-BIKERS – a number you should memorize in case you ever need it!

Motorcycle Attorney Russ Brown: It’s so exciting to see so many more women get out and enjoying the open road! Two wheels, three wheels whatever twist your grip, it’s all good in my book.

I bought my first Harley in my early 20’s and back then people wouldn’t even talk to me because I was the Harley girl .

Funny how judgmental people can be … All the rude comments about being a gal of “questionable character” all because I rode a motorcycle. Twits! They walked on the other side of the sidewalk, heck probably thought about hiding their children. I didn’t give a crap… I loved motorcycles, I love riding and I love making every day in life an adventure.

I’ve never had a brother, father or male figure in my life to help me with motorcycles, I did it all on my own. I think determination, bullheadedness and a good dose of stupidity is what fueled my passion for riding and I embrace my foundation of hard knocks to this day. Damn I’ve never been one to take the easy route.

Well that was then – this is now!

Today there are so many opportunities for women to get out and ride.

So many resources to learn on your own do it for yourself even if you don’t have any connections to others with motorcycles.

And if you do have friends, family and people around you that ride – Awesome! Join them. Life is better from the “moto view” of things.

So that’s a little of my story and what I’m excited about is we ALL have a story.

Back when I started, there was so little if hardly any support for women riders and I’m excited things have changed.

Adding a “turbo boost” to my excitement is my friend, fellow motorcyclist, kick ass Motorcycle Attorney Russ Brown will be supporting us women riders with some really awesome moto campaigns that I’ll be filling you in on. The BAM, Free Breakdown and Legal Assistance for Motorcyclists crew will be at ALOT of events this year; all the major rallies and we’re gonna have a lot of cool things to connect with you on.

I want to hear your stories ladies! How did you get started in riding? Who helped you? Post your stories in the comments here or on my Facebook page womenmotorcyclists.

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys will be hosting a party in honor of women riders at the Legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

So bring on the good times 2012!

Motorcycle Accident Attorney: If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident, the last thing you should do is take chances dealing with the at fault parties insurance company on your own. Protecting your rights and getting fair compensation to cover your medical bills, repairing your motorcycle, and lost wages is vitally important and you shouldn’t hesitate in consulting with an experienced motorcycle accident lawyer to find out how you should proceed with your accident injury claim with the insurance company.

Insurance companies are in the business of making money and when they are faced with an motorcycle crash injury claim they will do what ever it takes to settle the case for the lowest amount possible; this may not seem fair, but the reality is as soon as you have been injured in a motorcycle accident that wasn’t your fault, you are just a dollar figure to the at fault parties insurance company, and they will use their claims adjusters to minimize your claim so they can settle for as little money as possible.

Hiring an aggressive and experienced motorcycle accident lawyer will put the law on your side and make the insurance company fully accountable for the maximum settlement possible. This means they will have to pay for all of your current and future medical expenses, repair your motorcycle, and compensate you for all of your lost wagers while you were unable to work

Almost all motorcycle accident lawyers offer a free initial consultation, so talking with a lawyer so you have a full understanding of your case and how to proceed is simple. Additionally many personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they won’t charge you anything upfront and won’t get paid if they don’t win your case.

To find a top motorcycle accident lawyers in your area call Russ at Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys – 1-800-4BIKERS. Do not wait to contact a lawyer because there are time limits on filing an injury claim and by hiring a motorcycle accident lawyer to represent you as soon as possible, your case will be filed quicker and have you one step closer to recovering damages. It is also important that you do not speak with the insurance company, their claims adjusters or anyone other than the police. If you are asked to give a statement or sign anything, politely refer them to your personal injury lawyer. You are not obligated under the law to speak with anyone or sign anything.

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys have been fighting for injured bikers for over thirty years. Regardless of where you ride, whether that is in Los Angeles, California, San Francisco, CA or San Antonio, Texas, Houston, TX, Jacksonville, Florida or Columbus, Ohio, Phoenix, Arizona to Dallas, Texas we got you covered.
