The 70th Anniversary Of The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally About To Kick Off.
Bikers have been heading into Sturgis, South Dakota, for the past two weeks and the Sturgis Bike Rally doesn’t officially start till Friday (August 6). When we heard that motorcyclists were showing up early by the thousands we sent our BAM team (Free breakdown and legal assistance for motorcyclists) in a few days early. They will be set up at two different locations on Main St, Sturgis. The BAM girls team arrives on Monday and will be stationed at the legendary Buffalo Chip.
Drinking, Driving & The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Motorcycle Accident Lawyers
Every year there are motorcycle accidents during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and this year will be no exception. In fact, approximately 1/3 of western South Dakota’s motorcycle accidents for the entire YEAR are connected to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I guess it is hard not to have a few fender benders when there are hundreds of thousands of your closest friends circling through the Black Hills, SD, area. While minor motorcycling accidents are to be expected, it is truly tragic when a motorcyclist dies during this incredibly festive occasion. If you are heading down to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, it is important to take the necessary safety precautions and avoid drinking and driving at all costs.
Motorcyclists from all over the country make the trek to South Dakota for a week of drinking, eating, and riding. Unfortunately, alcohol and motorcycles make a deadly combination. According to the Examiner, during last year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a female rider from Kansas missed a stop sign and crashed into a motorcyclist, injuring his leg in the process. The rider was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and faced heavy fines and penalties.
The blood alcohol limit for driving in South Dakota is 0.08%, just like most areas in the United States. During last year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the South Dakota Highway Patrol arrested more motorcyclists for driving under the influence of alcohol than in previous years. Through the 2009 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, there were 316 DUI arrests, compared with only 253 in 2008 and 72 accidents which involved serious injury. And it is predicted that 2010 may be the biggest year yet so expect more police and more enforcement.
FUN FACT:
Just how much drinking is done during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally? According to some estimates, there are approximately 3 million gallons of beer consumed during the two weeks around the rally!
