New York Motorcycle Law: A safety helmet is required by law for all bikers as well as eye protection. Handle bars or grips cannot be more than the height of the operator's shoulders.
Muffler (required) law states no straight pipes; no removal of baffles; no modification of exhaust system that increases noise beyond exhaust system originally installed. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 9, Section 381 and the maximum allowable A-Weighted Sound Levels at Speed: 35 mph or less, 82 dB(A); over 35 mph, 86 dB(A), measured at, or adjusted to, a distance of fifty feet from the center of the lane in which the motorcycle is traveling. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 10, Section 386.
New York Motorcycle Insurance minimums are $25,000 per person injured in any one accident and $50,000 because of the death of one person in one accident and $50,000 for two or more persons injured in any one accident and $100,000 for the deaths of two or more persons in one accident. The Insurance requirements for motorcycles in New York are relatively more flexible than in other States, and where as in other states the standard policy length is 6 to 12 months, most policies written in New York are 8 months. You should purchase enough insurance to cover the value of your motorcycle as well as the highest coverage possible for injury, property damage, and insist on the highest amounts allowed for uninsured/ under insured motorists.
